Tents Donated to Uprooted Civilians Deemed 'Inadequate for Gaza's Winter'

Thousands of tents donated by several countries to accommodate uprooted residents in Gaza deliver only limited protection from rain and gales, a report assembled by relief specialists in the devastated territory has shown.

Findings Contradicts Assertions of Sufficient Shelter

The findings contradict assertions that civilians in Gaza are being provided with sufficient housing. Powerful storms in the last month toppled or destroyed thousands of tents, impacting at least 235,000 people, according to data from relief organizations.

"The fabric [of some tents] tears without much force as sewing quality is poor," the findings noted. "The material is not waterproof. Other issues involve inadequate windows, flimsy structure, no flooring, the canopy gathers water due to the design of the tent, and no mesh for openings."

Detailed Shortcomings Highlighted

Shelters from certain donor countries were criticised. Some were described as "non-waterproof flimsy fabric" and a "weak structure," while others were labeled as "extremely thin" and lacking waterproofing.

Conversely, shelters supplied by several donors were deemed to have fulfilled the requirements established by expert organizations.

Questions Arisen Over Aid Effectiveness

The findings – based on extensive responses to a survey and observations "from workers on the ground" – prompt new questions about the quality of assistance being delivered bilaterally to Gaza by particular countries.

Since the ceasefire, only a fraction of the temporary homes that had reached Gaza were distributed by major international relief agencies, as stated by one relief official.

Market Shelters Also Deemed Unsuitable

Civilians in Gaza and aid officials said shelters offered on the local market by for-profit suppliers were likewise unsuitable for Gaza's winter and were very expensive.

"Our shelter we live in is worn out and rain floods inside," said one displaced woman. "We obtained it from a contact; it is handmade from wood and tarpaulin. We cannot buy a new tent due to the exorbitant prices, and we have not received any assistance at all."

"We fled when we heard many explosions," she said. "I left all our possessions behind... I know living in a damaged building during winter is exceptionally dangerous, but we have no other choice."

Authorities have stated that several people have been have died by shelters collapsing after torrential rain.
